How It Works & Rules of Play

The complete rules, scoring, schedule, and everything else a coach or student needs to know before tournament day — replacing the old FAQ PDF entirely.

  • 4 students per team (3 ok)

  • Min. 2 games guaranteed, via a consolation bracket — never “one and done”

  • Free breakfast & lunch — school arranges transportation & subs

Day-of schedule

Every regional and the state championship follow the same schedule. Each game gets 30 minutes, and play runs continuously through the day using a bracket system.

8:00 am
Light breakfast is served (bagel/donut, coffee, juice, etc.) – no charge
8:30 am
First set of games begin
12:00 pm
Lunch is served – no charge. Tournament play resumes immediately after lunch
2:30 pm
Championship game concludes; trophies presented and photo opportunity!

Scoring, round by round

Each game has three parts plus tie-break overtime if needed. Points awarded and deducted change every part, and the question format shifts from directed to toss-up as the game goes on.

Advancing to state

The first- and second-place finishers from each region advance to the state championship tournament. Both teams that advance from a region can be from the same high school.
